Friday Flash Fiction - week 3!

Daddy’s New Girl Friend

Petra is Daddy’s new friend. I thought he already had a friend. I thought Uncle Paul was his friend. Yes, said Daddy, but daddies need girl friends too. Does Uncle Paul have a girl friend then? I asked. Tonnes said Daddy and he laughed. Tonnes is what elephants weigh. Paul must have elephant friends and girl friends too.

Hello schweetheart, Petra says to me. She talks funny. Not like mummy.

Be nice, daddy says, say hello to Petra.

Hello.

How are you? She talks really slowly, like she’s tired. So I talk slowly too so she can understand me. I’m…fine…

Hannah, be normal, daddy says. Why doesn’t he tell Petra to be normal? I cross my arms in front of my tummy and do my best angry face. Maybe I’ll cry.

It’s ok, I hear Petra saying softly, she’s only small.

I’m not small! I’m five and three quarters, I say then.

Wow, shoon you’ll be shixsh. A big girl.

Daddy is it my birthday soon? I make sure I say soon properly, not like Petra.

No darling, not for a long time.

But Petra said soon. Last week you told me soon is fivetoseven days.

Not always darling he says and gives Petra a look I don’t understand. Petra says something to Daddy but no sound comes out.

Shall we go? Daddy says and sighs his special Daddy sigh.

Where?

To the zoo.

Yippee!

Flash Fiction is short enough to read whilst you're waiting for the kettle to boil. It's fairly quick to write too, but with it being so short, every word has to count.

On 4th May 2012 I decided to embark on a project: to write a piece of Flash Fiction every day. I'm hoping this will keep the creative juices flowing and ultimately help me hone my craft. Every Friday I'll be posting 'the best of the week' onto my blog for you to read. If you have anything to say (good or 'constructive'!), I'm open to comments.

Thanks, as always, for reading.

  1. Nice little details to capture the ages, POV and overall situation.

  2. Hi! I one of your followers. Well I really like this ... would you mind if I post this on my blog on Fridays with a link to your blog?
You need to spread the word!

I'm an aspiring fiction writer loving YA and Paranormal, so from time to time I may join in with my short stories.
