Friday Flash Fiction - week 27

Choices

“Morning! What can I get you?”
“Coffee, please.”
“What kind of coffee?”
“Just a coffee.”
“Cappuccino? Latte? Mocha?”
“What’s a mocha?”
“It’s half coffee and half hot chocolate.”
“Oh no, not that then. What about the other ones?”
“Cappuccino is coffee with frothy milk and latte is coffee with steamed milk.”
“And how is steamed milk different from frothy milk?”
“Uh…more air?”
“Hmm. I’ll have a latte then.”
“Which kind of milk would you like?”
“Which kind of milk?!”
“Yes. Skimmed, semi, full-fat? Soy? Goat’s?”
“Do you have normal milk?”
“Normal cow’s milk?”
“Yes.”
“Yes, we do. Skimmed, semi or full-fat?”
“Semi please.”
“Which coffee would you like?”
“Haven’t I just ordered a coffee?”
“Which blend of coffee beans would you like? Ethiopian, Cuban or Brazilian?”
“Do you know what? Just forget it!”
“What happened to her?”
“Dunno. First she wanted a coffee and then she didn’t.”

Flash Fiction diary

I've often heard people say that there are just too many choices these days. This piece was inspired by that concept.

Last week saw the second installment of Flash Fortnightly on the Artipeeps website. Click here for Reflection, inspired by the Adele song, Someone Like You. Next Artipeep installment on Wednesday 5th December.

I've also stepped, rather gingerly, into the 21st century and have set up a twitter account! If you'd like to follow me, I can be found bumbling my way through this technology @laurabesley

Flash Fiction is short enough to read whilst you're waiting for the kettle to boil. It's fairly quick to write too, but with it being so short, every word has to count.

On 4th May 2012 I decided to embark on a project: to write a piece of Flash Fiction every day. I'm hoping this will keep the creative juices flowing and ultimately help me hone my craft. Every Friday I'll be posting 'the best of the week' onto my blog for you to read. If you have anything to say (good or 'constructive'!), I'm open to comments.

Thanks, as always, for reading.

  1. Ha ha ha. Excellent. And they haven't even got to size yet: midget? small? medium? tall? large? supersize?

    1. Too true! Tall, which means small in some places and the like! ;)

  2. Brilliant! And once we have established the size we must go back to the question of normal cow's milk. Is this milk from a normal cow as apposed to a mad cow? We must therefore be assured that the cow has passed a Bovine Mental Health Assessment and is fit to provide milk, and then of course we must offer the punter a choice of breeds of milk providers: Jersey, Guernsey, Dairy Shorthorn, British Frisian, Holstein, Ayrshire, Red Poll...

  3. Hahahahahahaha!!! Oh Jeez, this made me laugh. :)

Being a guy that throws a spoonful of "Instant" into a mug, alongside a sweetener and a dollop of supermarket milk, and on occasion being in a similar situation to our MC, I could absolutely relate to this.

  4. And this is yet another reason why I prefer to drink tea. Yes you can get tea lattes, but no-one questions it when you say you want a tea.

The scary part is, you didn't need to exaggerate anything to depict the situation!

    1. Thanks for commenting Katherine, much appreciated! Yes, tea is certainly easier, but for how long...?! ;)

  5. And whichever sort of coffee you choose in the UK it's usually lukewarm and always overpriced.

    1. Unfortunately that's often true. Apparently now you can ask for 'extra hot'. At least you can with hot chocolate, so it's worth trying for coffee too! :)
