The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling

About the Book

When Barry Fairbrother dies unexpectedly in his early forties, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Seemingly an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils…Pagford is not what it first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations? (taken from J.K. Rowling's official website).

What I Think

No, I haven't already got my hands on it! I'm guessing there aren't too many people on the planet more nervous than J.K. Rowling at this moment in time. In just over a week she'll be releasing her first book since the successful Harry Potter series, which is also her first book for adults. I can't imagine the pressure she must be under to deliver a bestseller.

And by pressure, I mean only in the sense of pride. No doubt J.K. Rowling doesn't need to work another day in her life. She is the world's first billionaire author and is number 30 on Britain's Rich List (Forbes). Yet she continues to write.

I know I'm more than a little curious...

Publication date: 27th September 2012 (U.K. and U.S.)

  1. She's a brave lady. Am looking forward to reading this book, even though - I confess - I never read any of the HPs. Have seen some of the films, and enjoyed those, does that count?

    1. I'm sure it does! ;) I haven't read all the HPs and was certainly not a fan when they were first released, but I have to say that they are good and seem to get better as the series continues.

  2. I have read all of the HPs, and this book sounds good. I'm definitely interested in reading it. Just hoping it's not allegorical.
