“Ben still doesn’t know, does he?” Sarah asked Gemma once the theme tune to X-factor started up indicating the commercial break.
“No,” Gemma replied muting the barrage of colours and slogans.
“Ben doesn’t know what?” A deep voice asked, from behind the sofa.
Their heads whipped round.
“B-ben,” Gemma said. “Didn’t know you were back from the pub.”
“Clearly,” he said, walking round to face both women. “Now, what don’t I know?”
“Uh, nothing,” Gemma said.
“Yeah, nothing,” Sarah echoed.
He planted two fists on his hips. “I’m damn well sure it isn’t.”
“Well…” Gemma began. “You see…”
“Go on,” Ben urged.
Sarah looked up at him. “We were planning you a surprise birthday party!”
He sighed. “My birthday was last month, Sarah.”
“These things take a lot of organising,” she tried looking past him at the television.
“Not that much. Sarah, clear off, will you? Go make some tea or something.” Sarah jumped up and walked quickly into the adjacent kitchen.
“Gemma,” he sat down on the sofa next to her, “can you please tell me what is going on?”
She burst into tears and covered her face. “I… I… bought another pair of shoes.”

Flash Fiction is short enough to read whilst you're waiting for the kettle to boil. It's fairly quick to write too, but with it being so short, every word has to count.
On 4th May 2012 I decided to embark on a project: to write a piece of Flash Fiction every day. I'm hoping this will keep the creative juices flowing and ultimately help me hone my craft. Every Friday I'll be posting 'the best of the week' onto my blog for you to read. If you have anything to say (good or 'constructive'!), I'm open to comments.
