Christmas in Hong Kong (part 1)

British people celebrate Christmas in a big way! It's interesting to see to what extent Christmas is celebrated in places where Christmas is not part of a centuries-old tradition. I'm living in Hong Kong and obviously this part of the East was under British rule until 1997, so it's logical that Christmas is celebrated a little. Last year I stayed here for Christmas and went out for Christmas lunch and all the shops were still open and it seemed that on Christmas Day local Hong Kongers were mainly shopping! I thought you might be interested in some of the photos of Hong Kong around Christmas time, so here you are...

Art Orchestra in Times Square

Today - after the endless days and weeks of rain - it was a lovely, sunny and pleasantly warm day in Hong Kong. Nick & I were wandering around Causeway Bay, looking for somewhere to eat, when we stumbled across this fabulous art exhibition in Times Square.

This exhibition of huge and imposing stainless steel structures is by Korean artist Kim Taik-Gi. I'm not sure how well-known he is, but there seems to be very little information available about him on the internet. There wasn't even anything on Wikipedia! I am intrigued as to whether he is extremely well-known in his field and the rest of us are just catching up, or whether he is indeed early on in his career.

This exhibition will be available to the public until 20th May 2012.

Art along the Promenade

A tourist hot spot in Hong Kong is the Avenue of Stars. In all honesty there's not much point for Western tourists as we don't really know who any of the 'stars' are. Out of the dozens that line the paving slabs, I think I counted six that I know.

Regardless of that fact, the walk along the Avenue of Stars is amazing for the view it offers of the famous Hong Kong skyline. It's along the water, so there's often a cooling breeze that offers a little respite on a hot day. And there's also the excitement of the boats, in their various shapes and sizes.

Recently I went to the Avenue of Stars and there was an art exhibition on display, Playgrounds: Contemporary French Photography (S. Couturier, G. Garcin, A. Bublex). It was wonderful to see this art displayed outside and it gave an added feel to the walk.

Not only did the art exhibition heighten the enjoyment of the walk along the promenade, but the clouds were rolling in and made for a wonderfully atmospheric view of the famous skyline.

For those of you living in Hong Kong the exhibition is on until May 2nd and is well worth a visit! Avenue of Stars, Tsim Sha Shui, Kowloon, Hong Kong.
