Friday Flash Fiction - week 2!

The Parcel
I wake up at the sound of the alarm and stretch out my arms. If I’m lucky my old, senile cat will have managed to find her way to the litter tray, and not have weed on any of the other floors in my house. I twist out of bed and slip my feet into my pink size ten flip-flops, admiring my newly painted silver toenails. They look so cute!

I shower, wash my hair and let it dry whilst I eat cereal for breakfast. I feed the cat, who has been incessantly meowing around my feet, go upstairs and blow-dry my hair. It takes time, around twenty minutes, and it took me a long time to get the hang of it, but now I can blow-dry myself a perfect shoulder-length bob. I look like Jennifer Aniston. Well, my hair looks like hers, a little.

I choose matching purple underwear, silky and lacy, which feels nice against my moisturised skin. I put on tights. Bugger it! I’ve ripped another pair. The second time I’m more careful and manage to get them on without the teeniest tiniest ladder. I choose a black skirt and a purple blouse with a frilly collar (to match my underwear).

Do I go for purple makeup, or will that be too much purple? I might just look beaten up. I decide not to risk it and go for browns and golds, just like the nice lady in the department store showed me. Ouch! These bloody eyelash curlers are a nightmare! I might consider false eyelashes, but not just yet.

Black shoulder bag, black shoes, keys. I pull the door closed behind me and blip the car door open. The postman is walking up the driveway towards me. “Morning Pete!” I say.

“Morning Mr. Green!” He says chirpily. “Three letters and a parcel for you today.”

Ooh, maybe it’ll be my online delivery from Dorothy Perkins.

Flash Fiction is short enough to read whilst you're waiting for the kettle to boil. It's fairly quick to write too, but with it being so short, every word has to count.

On 4th May 2012 I decided to embark on a project: to write a piece of Flash Fiction every day. I'm hoping this will keep the creative juices flowing and ultimately help me hone my craft. Every Friday I'll be posting 'the best of the week' onto my blog for you to read. If you have anything to say (good or 'constructive'!), I'm open to comments.

Thanks, as always, for reading.

  4. Brilliant story - very clever! Thanks for visiting my blog too Laura. It's nice to 'meet' someone else who was in Germany. I was very near Duesseldorf too, often visited the city. I taught English there, is that what you did too? I still miss it although it's a while ago now. Best wishes, Lindsay (Little Reader Library).

    1. Yes, I taught English there. Business English to adults in company, so it was a lot of travelling, but I learned a lot from my students!

I'm still teaching, but kids in Hong Kong now. What are you up to?

  7. Well written. I went back to find some of those clues, which were well guised on the first go round. Good job!
